How High Heart Rate Monitoring and Alerts Work

Modified on Thu, 31 Jul at 6:01 AM

The SOL-X SmartWatch continuously monitors a user’s heart rate to detect signs of physical strain, fatigue, and possible heat-related stress. Alerts are triggered based on a specific pattern of elevated heart rate readings during active periods.

Alert Trigger Logic

An alert is triggered when:

  • Three consecutive high heart rate readings are detected at 5-minute intervals

  • For example: high HR at 5 min, 10 min, and 15 min will trigger the 1st ALERT

  • If high HR continues, a 2nd ALERT will be issued at the 35-minute mark

This proactive detection helps users take timely breaks, hydrate, and manage stress.

Basis for High HR Alerts

  • High heart rate thresholds are derived using ACGIH guidelines

  • Calculated using the formula: 180 - Age

  • These thresholds represent elevated heart rate in response to fatigue or heat stress

Example Timeline

Time ElapsedHeart Rate StatusAlert Status
0:05 minHigh HR Detected
0:10 minHigh HR Detected
0:15 minHigh HR Detected1st ALERT
0:20 minNormal HR
0:25 minHigh HR Detected
0:30 minHigh HR Detected
0:35 minHigh HR Detected2nd ALERT

Important Notes

  • This is not a medical device: While the feature helps flag elevated HR, it is meant for fatigue and heat stress awareness only.

  • Active HR spikes may occur at rest: This could be due to stress or health conditions. Alerts are designed to surface potential issues early.

  • Resting HR is a key fatigue indicator: Calculated daily based on the lowest recorded HR. An upward trend can indicate accumulated fatigue.

  • External influences such as coffee, smoking, or medication may affect heart rate readings. When in doubt, always consult the ship’s medical officer.
