Fall Detection

Modified on Thu, 31 Jul at 6:27 AM

Seafarers and offshore workers often operate in high-risk environments where falls from height or unstable surfaces can occur. The SOL-X Smart Watch is equipped with an intelligent Fall Detection system that adds a layer of automated safety and response, helping to reduce incident response time and improve crew support.

How It Works

The fall detection system uses the smartwatch’s onboard motion sensors to identify a sudden impact or change in orientation. When such an event is detected, the following automatic steps are triggered:

Key features:

  • Immediate on-watch alert: "A Fall Was Detected" is shown with a Crew Assist activation message.

  • Automatic alert to control center: If the watch is connected to the network, a real-time alert is transmitted to the SOL-X Control Center Dashboard.

  • Location and identity sharing: The alert includes crew rank, name, exact fall location, and active Permit to Work (e.g., "Working Aloft").

  • Acknowledgement feedback: Once the control center confirms, the watch displays “Help is on the way” along with the name of the responding officer.

This automatic escalation ensures that even in situations where the crew member cannot call for help manually, responders are informed and dispatched quickly.

Understanding the Alert Flow

  1. Fall Detected on Watch
    The watch screen shows:
“A Fall was Detected. Crew assist has been activated. We are contacting an officer...”
The user can cancel the alert if triggered in error.

  2. Control Center Notification
The dashboard displays a Fall Detected alert with:

    • Rank and Name (e.g., OPS/Tech, Reza Ilmi)

    • Exact Location (e.g., Chemical Injection West Bottom)

    • Associated Permit to Work (e.g., Working Aloft)

  3. Acknowledgement & Reassurance
When the control center clicks "Acknowledge," the watch immediately displays:
“Help is on the way. Acknowledged by [Officer Name]”
The user can then mark the alert as “Done.”

About Sensor Sensitivity

While the system is designed to be responsive and reliable, false positives or missed detections can occur due to:

  • Accidental drops or sudden wrist movements

  • Incomplete falls that don’t register as severe impacts

  • Loss of connectivity during the event

Note: The fall detection system is an aid, not a replacement for standard PPE or operational protocols. Always follow your ship or site’s safety rules, and consider this feature as part of a layered safety system.
